Welcome to the 2017-18 school year! We are looking forward to having students return as there are many great opportunities that are here and additional ones that will be here in the near future.
So, what’s new? Since the spring the School Board has had a number of work groups operating that include a large number of community members and school people. We are always looking for more people to become involved, so interested individuals can contact me for more information. Below is a summary of what is being worked on:
Wall of Honor - As a result of their work, a new community Wall of Honor will be started this year as a way of recognizing Solon Springs people who have had a major influence on the community and/or the school. A broad-based community group will oversee this project.
Educational Foundation - In the near future the Educational Foundation of Solon Springs will be formed with the aim of seeking out funds that can be used to expand learning opportunities.
World Languages Laboratory - Another work group has been making very good progress to expand virtual learning options for students and to create charter school options. An immediate change will be the start-up of a World Languages Lab in which students will be able to learn any number of languages, beyond Spanish – this will include virtual learning under the direction of a World Languages Learning Coach.
Community Fitness Center - Looking to get some exercise? Based on community input last fall and winter a group is working to establish a community and school fitness room at school, as well as to raise funds. This would be open to the public. This will be located in school
As we start the new year, I want to thank the Solon Springs Community for its strong support for the school. As someone who started working here last fall, it is evident that this community values high quality education. One of our goals is to not only maintain a quality school, but also to expand how we serve the community so that Solon Springs is a “Destination Place for Students to be Educated”.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We have had a wonderful fall at Solon Springs School. We are continually looking to improve our school and one source we use to reflect on our strengths and areas for improvement is the School Report Card.
The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) generates a School Report Card and District Report Card for every publicly funded school and district in the state. These public report cards can be found online at: http://dpi.wi.gov/accountability/report-cards. The Report Cards are intended to help schools and districts use performance data to target improvement efforts that ensure students are ready for their next educational step – including the next grade level, graduation, college, and careers.
The current School Report Card is primarily based on last year’s performance, the 2016-17 school year. At the foundation of the report cards are four priority areas. Schools and districts receive a score for each priority area:
- Student Achievement proficiency in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics on the annual state assessments
- School Growth measured by year-to-year progress in ELA and math achievement.
- Closing Gaps in performance between specific student groups (comparing English language learners, low-income students, students with disabilities, and members of a racial or an ethnic group with their peers)
- On-Track and Postsecondary Readiness showing reliable predictors of how many students are on-track to graduate from high school and student readiness for post-high school success.
Schools and districts are also evaluated on their level of student engagement – chronic absenteeism rates and dropout rates – when applicable.
The priority area scores are aggregated into an overall accountability score, from 0 to 100. This score is displayed in the top left corner of the School or District Report Cards. It is important to note that the 0 to 100 accountability score is not a “percent correct” measurement. Based on its score, a school or district receives one of five rating categories, from Fails to Meet Expectations to Significantly Exceeds Expectations, as well as corresponding one to five stars.
Here’s some information we’d like to share from our Solon Springs report card:
Our Student Achievement scores reflect an impressive improvement in achievement scores from last year to this school year. Our English Language Arts (ELA) scores indicate an over 9 percentage point improvement. Our Mathematics scores indicate an improvement of 12.9 percent.
The State of Wisconsin DPI encourages caution when reviewing report cards that have ^ symbol next to their rating as it is unclear whether the change in scores is due to an actual change in school/district performance, or a symptom of statistical volatility. While we as staff will continue to analyze data related to student achievement with a critical lens, we also celebrate a focused effort this past school year that emphasized working collaboratively to ensure all students were encouraged to do their best on any assessment or academic challenge using pride, perseverance, competition, motivation and honor!
DPI has produced two versions of each Report Card: a quick one-pager labeled “School Report Card” and lengthier, detailed version labeled, “School Report Card Detail.” Both versions can be accessed online at http://dpi.wi.gov/accountability/report-cards along with resources that explain the report cards. I have included the one page School Report Card for Solon Springs here as well.
As DPI stresses, these report cards are just one source of information about our school. Given that, I want to share some other data that helps illuminate some of our successes and helps pinpoint areas of work in our school/district. Here is some additional information that shows we are moving in the right direction.
- Of 18 seniors, 7 have been accepted to colleges (many of them have been selected to multiple colleges). 3 more have confirmed that they are entering the armed forces after graduation.
- 8 of our 18 seniors have turned in paperwork documenting their completed Community Service Requirement.
- According to student assessments using Career Cruising through the Academic Career Placement (ACP) process, we have a number of students who are interested in careers in fields medical, technology, and education, this is important looking ahead at the course catalog.
- 18 students currently enrolled in classes for college credit with the potential for earning a total of 48 credits.
- 77% of students using STAR Math Assessments are scoring at or above the 50th percentile.
- 70% of students using STAR Reading Assessments are scoring at or above the 50th percentile.
- 75% of our Elementary Students have missed 5 or less days of school. Good attendance translates into academic success!
- Well over 25% of our student body participated with the school musical performance this fall.
- Our Cross Country team earned the honor of participating in State level competition for the first time since 1991!
